Screen Cracked? Here's What Actually Affects Repair Cost

11 June 20265 min read

Screen repair pricing can look inconsistent from the outside — one shop quotes $79, another quotes $189 for what sounds like the same job. Usually the gap comes down to one of four things, and knowing which one lets you compare quotes properly instead of just picking the lowest number.

Glass-only versus full digitizer assembly

On most modern phones, the front glass is fused to the display and touch layer as a single assembly — you can't replace just the cracked glass without replacing the whole unit. Cheaper quotes sometimes mean a lower-grade aftermarket assembly; more expensive ones often mean an OEM or high-grade panel. This is usually the single biggest price driver, and it's worth asking directly which type you're being quoted.

Whether the device needs recalibration after the repair

Some phones link the screen, battery, and biometric sensors together for security — swap the screen without the right tools and calibration step, and you can lose Face ID or fingerprint unlock even though the crack is gone. Shops that include this step properly tend to charge more, because it takes real time and the right equipment. A very cheap quote sometimes means this step is being skipped.

Water resistance reseal

Opening a phone breaks its factory water seal. Reputable shops replace the adhesive gasket as part of the job to restore water resistance — that's a real material and labour cost, and it's the difference between a repair that holds up if you get caught in the rain and one that doesn't.

Same-day versus multi-day turnaround

Shops that stock parts for common models can often turn a screen repair around in an hour or two. Shops that order the part after you book will usually be cheaper, since they're not holding inventory — but you're waiting days, and taking on the risk of an ordering delay. Neither approach is wrong; it's a real trade-off worth knowing about before you compare two prices that look identical.

What to actually ask when comparing quotes

The price alone doesn't tell you much. These four questions do.

  • Is the glass-only or a full assembly, and OEM or aftermarket?
  • Does the price include recalibration of Face ID / fingerprint sensors?
  • Is a new water-resistance seal included?
  • Is the part in stock, or ordered after booking — and what's the real turnaround?
