How to Choose a Trustworthy Repair Shop: A Buyer's Checklist
Every repair shop's sign says "expert technicians" and "fast, affordable service." That tells you nothing. The differences that actually matter tend to be the things you'd only discover after something goes wrong — so it's worth checking for them beforehand instead.
Ask what happens if the repair doesn't fix the problem
A shop confident in its own work will have a clear answer — usually some version of "we don't charge you if it's not fixed." A shop that gets vague or defensive about this question is telling you something. Warranty terms matter more than warranty length: 90 days that actually covers parts and labour beats a year that only covers the part.
Check whether the price includes genuine parts, and ask if it doesn't
Aftermarket screens and batteries aren't automatically bad — plenty are perfectly good — but the price gap between genuine and aftermarket parts is often the entire reason one quote is cheaper than another. A shop that tells you upfront which you're getting, and lets you choose, is being straight with you. One that won't say isn't necessarily dishonest, but it's worth a direct question before you book.
Look at how they handle your data, not just your device
A phone repair often means a technician has physical access to a device that's logged into your email, banking apps, and photos. Ask what their policy is on customer data — a shop that has a real answer (staff vetting, no unnecessary access to personal content, secure storage for devices left overnight) has thought about this before you asked. That's a good sign in itself.
Read reviews for how disputes were handled, not just star ratings
Every shop with enough history has at least one unhappy customer somewhere. What's more useful than the rating itself is whether the shop responded, and how. A business that engages constructively with a bad review is usually more trustworthy than one with a suspiciously perfect five-star record and zero replies.

- Genuine or aftermarket parts — and can I choose?
- Is there a fee if the repair doesn't fix the issue?
